What Is the PMP?
The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is recognised in over 180 countries and consistently ranks among the top salary-boosting credentials in the world.
It is not a technical certification โ it validates your ability to lead and manage projects using proven methodologies including both predictive (waterfall) and agile approaches.
Eligibility Requirements
To sit the PMP exam, you need:
- With a 4-year degree: 36 months of project management experience + 35 hours of PM education
- With a high school diploma: 60 months of project management experience + 35 hours of PM education
The 35 hours of education can be completed through online courses, many of which take just a few weeks.
The Exam Format
The PMP exam consists of 180 questions delivered in a computer-based format. The exam takes approximately 4 hours with two scheduled 10-minute breaks. Questions are a mix of multiple choice, drag and drop, and matching formats.
Roughly half of the exam content relates to agile and hybrid project environments โ a significant change introduced in 2021 that catches many candidates off guard.
Why Most Candidates Fail
The PMP is not a knowledge test โ it is a situational judgement test. PMI wants to know how you would respond as an experienced project manager. Many candidates answer questions based on real-world experience and get them wrong because PMI's preferred answer always reflects the PMI framework, not common sense.
