Why CompTIA Security+ Matters
CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) is the most widely recognised entry-level cybersecurity certification in the world. It is vendor-neutral, government-recognised (DoD 8570 baseline), and is often the minimum requirement for security analyst and SOC roles.
The current version, SY0-701, was updated in 2023 and has a heavier focus on cloud security, zero-trust concepts, and automation than previous versions.
Exam Structure
The Security+ exam consists of a maximum of 90 questions across multiple formats:
- Multiple choice (single and multiple answer)
- Performance-based questions (PBQs) โ drag and drop, simulations
You have 90 minutes. The passing score is 750 out of 900.
The Five Domains (SY0-701)
1. General Security Concepts (12%) โ Frameworks, controls, cryptography basics
2. Threats, Vulnerabilities & Mitigations (22%) โ Attack types, threat actors, indicators of compromise
3. Security Architecture (18%) โ Cloud, network segmentation, zero trust
4. Security Operations (28%) โ Identity management, monitoring, incident response
5. Security Program Management (20%) โ Governance, risk, compliance, data privacy
Performance-Based Questions โ The Hidden Challenge
PBQs appear at the beginning of the exam and are the section most candidates struggle with. They involve configuring firewalls, analysing network diagrams, or identifying threats in a simulated environment. They cannot be skipped โ but if you are stuck, make your best guess and move on. Time management is critical.
